Doing the Right Thing: Engineering Health Improvements for Developing World Communities March 2, 2017

Welcome to a vision of a world where all have access to sanitation, potable water, and safe indoor air; where all children are able to learn in well-built classrooms; where families no longer suffer from disease, starvation, and poverty; where renewable energy has replaced fossil fuels—and engineers are part of the solution.  In this talk Professor Mihelcic will provide examples of several engineering and research projects located in the developing world that seek to improve health and well-being by increasing access to safe water and improved sanitation and also enhance food security.   Students will travel with him to Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, and see how you can effectively apply your engineering skills with new skills of stakeholder engagement to make the world a better place.

James R. Mihelcic is the Samuel L. and Julia M. Flom Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the International Development Engineering Program at the University of South Florida.   He is a global expert on provision of water, sanitation, and hygiene in developing world settings and a leader in integration of principles of sustainability into engineering education, research, and practice.  Dr. Mihelcic is a past president of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, past Board Trustee for the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, and is recently completed serving a second term with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Chartered Science Advisory Board.  He is a Board Certified Environmental Engineering Member and a Fellow with WEF and AEESP.   Dr. Mihelcic is lead author for four textbooks including Field Guide in Environmental Engineering for Development Workers: Water, Sanitation, Indoor Air (ASCE Press, 2009) and, Environmental Engineering: Fundamentals, Sustainability, Design (John Wiley & Sons, 2014).
