Protecting Public Health: Peace Corps and Beyond October 26, 2017

Patricia Drummey Stiegel, PE
Senior Associate, Hazen and Sawyer

There are many ways to use engineering skills to make the world a better place.  In this talk, Tricia will discuss her journey to a developing country with the intent of helping improve the lives of people living without access to electricity, clean drinking water, or adequate sanitation.  The challenges she faced and the lessons learned helped inform her future career.  She now works for Hazen and Sawyer, a consulting engineering firm, and spends her days working with teams of people to complete projects that protect the environment and public health.   The unifying themes of culture, people, and communication have cut across her career to date.

Tricia Drummey Stiegel is a 2003 Notre Dame BSCE graduate.  She served two years as a Water and Sanitation Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic, where she worked with two small communities to improve their access to clean drinking water and improved sanitation.  She then received a Masters of Environmental Engineering from UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Public Health.  She has worked for the past 10 years at Hazen and Sawyer, an Environmental Engineering firm specializing in all things water, primarily focusing on the design of wastewater treatment plants.  She lives in Durham, North Carolina, with her husband and two young daughters.
