The Southern Louisiana and Mississippi region, vital to our nation's economy and culture, presents critical scientific and engineering challenges in the areas of riverine and delta morphology, plate tectonics, hydraulic engineering, structural and soils engineering, and marshland ecology and environmental engineering. The specific purpose of the trip is to develop an understanding of the delta and marshes, of the engineered structures that protect the infrastructure in the coastal floodplain, of the recent failures, and of the science and engineering that are going on to build a better and safer flood protection system.
This field trip was made possible by the generous support of the Murphy Travel Fund and the Department of Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences, and was hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center.
